Morioka got a terrific game from catcher Diosdado de la Cruz. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Aomori, 8-6. de la Cruz went 4-5 with 4 singles. Melquíades Nazario went 7.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 10 hits. The left-hander struck out 4 and walked 5. With the win, he ups his record to 10-9 this season. The third-place Ayame dropped to 53-48.

Early in the game, third baseman Howard Dodd had a grand slam home run for Aomori. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Hotaru on top, 4-0.

Dodd attributed the triumph to "a good team effort."
