Yardmen Get Past Abilene for 5-4 Win
|
The Wichita Falls Yardmen launched their 1913 campaign with a victory over the Abilene Preachers at Yardmen Park. Wichita Falls first baseman Timoteo Rodríguez was instrumental in the 5-4 win. He was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Íñigo León got the win, improving to 1-0. He pitched 9 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 10 and walking 2.
The game was decided with no one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Wichita Falls trailing 4-3, Rodríguez jumped on a slider from 24-year old right-handed pitcher Herminio Sepúlveda and hit a 2-run home run to right. With one swing, the Yardmen had a walk-off win.
"It's nice to deliver when your team's counting on you," said Rodríguez.
