With designated hitter Helio Ortiz leading the charge, the Lubbock Layabouts defeated the Abilene Preachers, 8-5, at Lubbock Grounds. Ortiz, who is tied for 7th in the FBL-WA with a .415 on-base percentage, went 4-5 with a home run and 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Les Haynes was the winner. He's now 16-18. The loser was Flavio Luis. The Layabouts improved to 77-55.

The Layabouts got a big hit from second baseman Kirk Thompson. Facing Abilene pitcher Flavio Luis in the bottom of the sixth, Thompson pounded a run-scoring double to left. His 18th double of the season put the Layabouts ahead, 4-3.

"Scoring runs is scoring runs," said Lubbock skipper Ángel Rodríguez. "It's important to have different ways to do it."
