The Trinidad Tabacaleros got a good effort from starter Martín Ortiz in defeating the Santiago de Cuba Soneros at Campo de los Tabacaleros. The final score was 5-1. Ortiz yielded 1 run over 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. His record improves to 3-4. Karim Anbar closed the game out for Trinidad, earning his 12th save.

The Soneros had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Tabacaleros going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 30-year old catcher Tarquino Benítez came to the plate. Benítez hit a 2-run double on a first pitch fastball from Santiago de Cuba hurler Manuel Zendejas. It was Benítez's 15th double of the year.

"At the end of the day, it's about putting up zeros," said Ortiz.

The triumph puts Trinidad at 62-58 for the season.
