McCarthy Deals Pinar del Rio 7-1 Setback
Pitcher Jeffrey McCarthy was sensational for the Cienfuegos Elefantes in his team's 7-1 triumph over the Pinar del Rio Guajiros. McCarthy earned the win. At 59-51, the Elefantes find themselves in second place in the Torneo Occidental Matanzas.

McCarthy, who has sometimes raised the ire of coaches and teammates with his famously lackadaisical work ethic, turned in a spirited effort. The hurler struck out 4 in 8 innings and gave up 1 run.

McCarthy, who finished 5th in the TOCC in strikeouts with 131 in 1905, moves to 9-8 on the year with 83 strikeouts.

In comments to the Cienfuegos Daily, McCarthy admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
