Independientes Walk It Off for 4th Win of Season
|
Valencia got a decent performance from pitcher Nicolás Fernández, but it wasn't enough to beat the Maracaibo Independientes. Maracaibo won the Estadio de Maracaibo contest, 5-4. Fernández threw 8.1 innings of 7-hit ball for the losing team. Valencia falls to 3-4.
The Independientes were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth inning, when 30-year old second baseman Giovannino Olmeda landed a big blow. He turned a full count sinker from Samuel Gámez into a 2-run single. The walk-off single sent the Estadio de Maracaibo denizens into a frenzy and sent the Independientes home with a thrilling 5-4 win.
"This is a great group to be a part of, and it's a big win for us," Olmeda told the Maracaibo Bulletin.
