Thomas Helps Providence Cruise to 11-3 Win
The Providence Gems put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the Newport Pilot Whales in the season opener at The Mine. Center Fielder Dewey Thomas won plaudits for Providence. He was 4-4 with a double and 3 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Kit McKenna, the winner, is now 1-0. He struck out 8 and walked 5 over 7 innings, while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits.

With Providence leading 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Thomas came up to bat against Newport pitcher Santiago Treviño. Thomas hit a circle change to left for a bases-clearing double. His 1st double of the season put the Gems on top, 11-2.

"This was one of those games you love to be a part of," said Thomas.
