Soggy conditions did not keep Providence and Newport from playing their scheduled game.

The Providence Gems beat the Newport Pilot Whales by a score of 10-3. Providence first baseman Rodolfo Ramírez deserved the lion's share of the credit. Ramírez was 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles, while scoring 3 times and driving in 3 for the Gems. Silvio Rojas got the win, improving to 4-8. He pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 2.

Víctor Higuera helped his team jump on top from the get-go. His first time up in the top of the first, he hit a first pitch curveball from Bert Jones for a bases-clearing double, to give Providence a 3-0 lead.

Ramírez told a Providence Chronicle reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.
