Pilot Whales Go Down to Defeat, 6-2
|
The Providence Gems picked up a win at The Mine, knocking off the Newport Pilot Whales, 6-2. Starting pitcher Baldovino Font played a key role in the triumph. In 7.1 innings, Font surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 3. He allowed 2 runs. The last-place Gems improved to 23-53.
Esteban Ramírez had a big 2-run double for the Gems in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Providence leading 3-1 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a circle change from Santiago Treviño, who is tied for 9th in the SNEA in complete games with 10, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 8th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Gems ahead, 5-1.
"Baldovino had good stuff. When he did get into a compromising count, he made the most of it," said Providence manager George Bechtel.
