Pilot Whales Defeated, 2-0
|
Right-hander Baldovino Font mesmerized the Newport Pilot Whales while leading the Providence Gems to a 2-0 victory. Font, now 11-12, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 8, walking 6, and allowing no runs. Al Burris closed the door for Providence, picking up his 16th save of the year.
With runs few and far between, the Gems had to seize their opportunities when they came. One of the most important chances for Providence came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when slick-fielding center fielder Dewey Thomas delivered a run-scoring single. The single was hit off Octavio Morales and made the score 2-0, Gems. Thomas was 2 for 4 with 2 singles.
"This game will punch you right in the mouth," said Font. "My job is to show up and give my team a chance."
The last-place Gems improved to 44-77.
