Pilot Whales Take Down Gems, 6-5
The Newport Pilot Whales and Providence Gems rewarded fans hoping for a nail-biter.

Newport parlayed a decent outing from starter Pedro González into a solid win over the Providence Gems. The final score was 6-5. Reliever Melquíades Ortiz picked up the win. His record improves to 8-4. Jack Cronin took the loss.

Coming to the plate with two out in the bottom of the 12th inning, Newport center fielder Francisco Macedo had a chance to be the hero. Facing Providence pitcher Jack Cronin with a runner on 2nd, Macedo, who is tied for 2nd in the SNEA in runs scored with 83, hit a run-scoring single.

Macedo attributed the triumph to "a good team effort."

The setback makes Providence 43-84.
