Woonsocket and Providence put this game in the books despite some rain.

The Woonsocket Foxes rode a solid performance from 30-year-old starting pitcher C. Smith to a win, beating the Providence Gems, 5-2, at The Foxhole. Jimmy Wiggs closed it out for Woonsocket, earning his 2nd save.

In the bottom of the fifth, Woonsocket designated hitter Higinio Arenas had a run-producing at-bat. Facing Providence hurler Welcome Gaston, Arenas hit a sacrifice fly. That made the score 4-2, Woonsocket. For the day, Arenas drove in 2 runs.

"C. -- his tempo and rhythm were good," said Foxes manager Darío Avellaneda. "He was the key to us winning."

The first-place Foxes improved to 72-58.
