Ernesto López imposed his will on the Escondidos from the get-go. Relying mainly on his curveball, the right-hander spearheaded the 4-1 Mayaguez triumph. The winner was López. He threw 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball. The loser was Nicolás Serrano. The 10th-place Alfereces improved to 14-19.

The game could have flipped with no one out in the bottom of the eighth. But Ernesto López made what his manager later called "an A-plus pitch." With a runner on 1st and Quebradillas trailing 4-1, López threw a fastball to Cecilio Ramírez, who struck out.
