In a tight contest between the Rio Grande Zarzas and the Vieques Zumbadorcitos, Silverio Martínez was the determining factor. The Rio Grande right-hander sparkled in his team's 3-1 win. The winning pitcher was Martínez, now 9-10. He tossed 8.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 4 and fanning 6. Esteban Sigmund notched his 11th save of the season.

Rio Grande used a well-timed hit by Rick Hatt to capture the win. The designated hitter socked a 2-run double in the top of the third inning to put the Zarzas ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.

"Silverio was in control from the top," said Rio Grande manager Bill Kelly.

The Zarzas improved their record to 36-46 with the win over Vieques.
