The Maracaibo Independientes got a superb performance from pitcher Luis Almodóvar, who shut out the Coro Bizantinos, 1-0. Almodóvar got the win, improving to 9-3. He gave up 8 hits and walked 2 over 9 innings. He allowed no runs. Maracaibo is now 34-22.

Up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, 27-year old second baseman Sílvano Mendoza had a chance to be the hero. Coro pitcher Rafael Valentín wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Mendoza hit a sacrifice fly. The Independientes had themselves a thrilling win.

"That was a good game -- all the way through," said Mendoza.
