Fans were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown Nueva Esparta Cunaguaros take on the Caracas Sultanes.
Riding the 3-hit performance of the 29-year old left fielder Enrique Delgado, the Caracas Sultanes stopped the Nueva Esparta Cunaguaros, 7-1, in 9 innings. Osvaldo Loera, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 16th save.
The game was at a stalemate until catcher Penn German came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Nueva Esparta pitcher Ramón Escalante, he hit a 1-2 slider for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Caracas on top, 3-1.
Delgado told a Caracas Herald reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.
The Sultanes now have a mark of 41-46.
