The Kumamoto Kuma knocked off the Kagoshima Teitoku, 9-4, in Southern League action at Teitoku Park. Kumamoto pitcher and Higashiosaka, Japan, native Tokutomi Sakai had an outstanding performance. Sakai got the win, improving to 2-4. He gave up 9 hits and walked 2 over 9 innings. He allowed 4 runs. Kumamoto, at 13-18, holds down 7th place in the Southern League.
Kumamoto used the timely hitting of Kirby Kavanagh to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Kuma on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Whenever I help the team," said Kavanagh, "it sort of justifies my place on the roster."
