The 8-3 Maracaibo win over Valencia was due largely to Vicente Segovia. The Independientes center fielder was 4-5 with 3 triples. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. Celestino López got the win, improving to 1-1. He pitched 9 innings, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 2. The second-place Independientes now sit at 61-43.
With Maracaibo leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Segovia came up to bat against Valencia pitcher Justino Martínez. Segovia hit a curveball to left-center for a run-scoring triple. His 38th triple of the season put the Independientes on top, 2-0.
"We maximized our offense today," said Maracaibo skipper Baldomero Neave. "That makes everyone's life easier."
