The Takasaki Sakura downed the Niigata Hakuchoh, 2-1, at Hakuchoh Park. Stellar pitching by Édgar Mata had a lot to do with it. The left-hander, who is tied for 9th in the NL in quality starts with 15, handcuffed his opponent all game. The winner was Mata. He threw 8.2 innings of 5-hit ball. The loser was Paulino Murillo. The Sakura now have a record of 51-58 with the win over Niigata.
Makoto Tsuji had a direct impact on the outcome. Tsuji contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the seventh inning to put Takasaki up, 2-0.
"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Tsuji said.
