The Kumamoto Kuma took the first game of the Japan Series in dramatic fashion, topping the Fukushima Kamome, 4-3, in an extra-inning walk-off win. Kuma right-hander Hidenosuke Suzuki threw 10.0 innings of 7-hit ball.

Up to bat in the bottom of the tenth, 29-year old shortstop Tom Downey had a chance to be the hero. Fukushima pitcher Shuji Okamura wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Downey hit a sacrifice fly. The Kuma had themselves a thrilling win.

"There was a kid in the stands with a sign that said 'Kumamoto Kuma (probably) 1913 Japan Series Champions'," Downey told reporters after the game. "I told him, 'Premature, but I like the confidence.'"

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Kuma Stadium in Kumamoto.
