Road Win Lifts Maracaibo to 1-0 Lead in SP
The Maracaibo Independientes powered past the hometown Maracay Jardineros, 3-1, in the opener of the Serie Preliminar at Jardines de Maracay. Maracaibo starting pitcher Luis Almodóvar threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Independientes now lead the series 1-0.

Almodóvar went the distance for Maracaibo. He allowed 1 run on 5 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 1.

"Things broke our way today and that's great," Independientes manager Baldomero Neave said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Jardines de Maracay in Maracay.
