The Puerto La Cruz Timoneles powered past the hometown Coro Bizantinos, 3-2, in the opener of the Campeonato Nacional de Venezuela at Estadio de Coro. Puerto La Cruz starting pitcher Casimiro Ríos threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Timoneles now lead the series 1-0.

Ríos, a native of Turmero, Venezuela, was dealing all game. He kept Coro hitters off-balance, while giving the Timoneles 9 quality innings. Ríos threw 98 pitches, allowing 5 hits and striking out 4.

"Casimiro is a tough competitor," said Puerto La Cruz manager Egidio Martínez.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Estadio de Coro in Coro.
