Cornicos Score Late to Win, 5-4
|
The Hidalgo Cornicos knocked off the Michoacan Calaveras, 5-4, in Sur action at Campo Municipal de Morelia. Hidalgo pitcher and Chilpancingo, Mexico, native José López had an outstanding performance. Julio Irizarry picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 7-8. Santiago Alvarado, who finished 3rd in the LN in saves with 4 in 1903, was tagged with the loss. The Cornicos now have a record of 27-52 with the win over Michoacan.
Hidalgo used a timely hit from 29-year old center fielder René Vanegas to get the win. The pinch hitter delivered a run-scoring triple in the top of the 11th inning to put the Cornicos on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was huge.
"These kind of wins can be so good for a club's psyche," Hidalgo manager Rafael Alecio said.
