Yamatokoriyama Wins Pennant Series
Sunday, August 23rd , 1914
The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat were on full display tonight at Kuma Stadium as the Pennant Series stretched to the final game.
It was the Yamatokoriyama Kingyo feeling the thrill of victory, with a 6-5 win over the Kumamoto Kuma, who were feeling the devastation of coming up short in their quest to make the Japan Series.
"There's no way around it -- this sucks," said Kumamoto manager Plinio Cortez. "Congratulations to Yamatokoriyama, but I won't sugarcoat it, no one is happy about anything that transpired here tonight."
Instrumental in the 4-3 series win was center fielder Aldomiro RodrÃguez, who was named MVP. He hit .393 with a .452 on-base percentage. He had 1 home runs, drove in 8 RBI and scored 6 runs.
"We've got the most important stat of all and that's this final win -- that's the one that matters," he said.
The Yamatokoriyama Kingyo will play against the Niigata Hakuchoh in the next round. Niigata won their series against the Aomori Hotaru 4 games to 0. The Japan Series schedule will be announced after the Pennant Series finishes.
