Victory Takes Blast Furnaces to 9-7
|
The rain could not keep the home crowd from enjoying a good ballgame.
The Gary Blast Furnaces overcame a good performance by Escanaba center fielder Mark Thompson to knock off Escanaba, 6-5, at Stadium of a Thousand Degrees. Thompson went 2-2 with a home run. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. Germán Parga was the winner. Over 5.2 innings, he yielded 5 runs on 8 hits, with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Picking up the save was 24-year old right-handed pitcher Eusebio Ortiz.
Jesús García, who is tied for 7th in the WGLA with a .702 slugging percentage, helped out the Gary cause in the bottom of the first inning with a run-scoring ground out. For the game, the designated hitter drew 1 walk in 3 trips to the plate.
"It all comes down to competing and our guys love to compete," said Blast Furnaces manager Eduardo Rivera.
The Wanderers, now 7-13, continue their poor start.
