In a low-scoring affair between the Duluth Zeniths and the Marquette Smelters, pitcher Omar Martínez was the difference between victory and defeat. The Duluth left-hander earned kudos in the 3-1 Zeniths win. Duluth is in second place in the Western Great Lakes Association League of Lake Superior with a record of 36-29.

Duluth used the timely hitting of Vicente Esquivel to capture the win. The first baseman stroked a 2-run double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Zeniths on top, 3-0. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but he made it count.

In comments to the Duluth Chronicle, Esquivel admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
