Watt Stars as Phillies Top Orioles, 9-1
|
The Philadelphia Phillies outclassed the Baltimore Orioles, 9-1, at National League Park 1895-1909. Marvin Watt, who finished 2nd in the EL in extra base hits with 29 in 1908, was a major contributor for Philadelphia. Watt went 4 for 4 with a double and 3 singles. He scored 3 times. Wiley Piatt got the win, improving to 1-0. He held the Orioles to 1 run on 6 hits over 8 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 1. The Orioles, now 8-15, continue their sluggish start.
Lee Tannehill aided the Philadelphia cause with a run-scoring walk in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, the shortstop drew 1 walk in 4 trips to the plate.
"We were firing on all cylinders," said Phillies manager Matthew Goforth.
