Puerto La Cruz Breaks Through for First Win in Serie Eliminatoria; Now Trails 2-1
The Puerto La Cruz Timoneles have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Maturin Petroleros, winning, 5-3, at Estadio de Puerto La Cruz. Timoneles right-hander Julián Pérez threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The win cuts the deficit facing the Timoneles to 2-1 in the best-of-5 Serie Eliminatoria.

Diego Contreras dealt the Petroleros a blow in the bottom of the sixth. Batting with runners on 2nd and 3rd and Puerto La Cruz leading 3-1, Contreras hit a 1-0 splitter for a 2-run double.

"We were a little off-kilter to start the series, but we're getting things figured out now," Puerto La Cruz manager Egidio Martínez told reporters. "At least I hope we are."

Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday at Campo de los Petroleros in Maturín.
