Costello Crowned EL Bat King
Sunday, August 31st , 1913
The numbers speak for themselves: a .300 batting average in 90 games, 111 hits, 25 doubles, 9 triples, no home runs, 40 RBIs, 56 runs scored and 43 walks.
Those numbers added up to a batting title for Rob Costello of the New York Giants.
The 24-year-old shortstop received the 1913 Eastern League batting trophy today. At the award ceremony, Costello was definitely proud of his achievement.
"I always knew that I had the talent to win a batting title," Costello commented to reporters, "but I've had trouble at times with consistency. Everything came together this season. I hope this is not the last time. It will be a challenge, but I hope to win it again."
