The Marquette Smelters defeated the Grand Marais Voyageurs, 4-3, in Western Great Lakes Association action at Ballpark by the Marsh. Marquette pitcher Marco García had a standout performance. Marquette reliever Hernán González was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Marcos Gerena. The loss puts Grand Marais at 11-9.

Marquette used the timely hitting of Bobby Hawley to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Smelters on top, 4-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.

"We'll take some time to unwind," said García, "and then get after the next one."
