Marquette took on Grand Marais in front of a lively crowd.

The Marquette Smelters picked up a win at Pig Iron Stadium, dropping the Grand Marais Voyageurs, 4-3. Gonzalo Martínez, who is tied for 8th in the WGLA in wins with 19, was the difference-maker. Martínez, who is tied for 6th in the WGLA in strikeouts with 208, went the distance for Marquette. He gave up 3 runs on 10 hits.

Up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, 31-year old third baseman Lope Reyes had a chance to be the hero. Grand Marais pitcher Luis Zacarías wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Reyes hit a sacrifice fly. The Smelters had themselves a thrilling win.

"That was a backyard tug-of-war," said Smelters manager Cédric Oger.

After today's action, Marquette sits at 65-64; Grand Marais slips to 74-55.
